Ian Stewart Takes Home NASA TTC Championship on AST 5100s

Posted in AST Suspension, Wins on October 6th, 2009 by admin-ast – Be the first to comment

When points matter most, AST delivers. As does Ian Stewart! Ian built his National Champion Mini Cooper with the best of the best. Ian needed the best suspension money could buy BUT he needed it to fulfill the rules of NASA’s Time Trial classes which have point values on adjustments and dollar amounts. Accrue too many points and you’re in the next fastest class. Naturally we suggested AST 5100s which use the same competition parts as our 5200 two way remotes and 5300 triple adjustable shocks at a lower price point. Ian proved that good driving and single adjustable shocks can (and do) win at the national level. You don’t have to “break the bank” to win. Thanks again Ian!

RobiSpec wins Redline Stock AWD and Overall Stock with AST 5200s!

RobiSpec was in full force at the Redline Time Attack event Round 7. Robert “Robi” Fuller piloted his new ’08 STI complete with AST 5200 Suspension. Robi, known for his suspension tuning with another shock company, took the STI out on its maiden voyage with AST dampers and took home the win in class and Overall Stock class as well. Robi said, “The shocks were great right out of the box. The car had so much grip, I didn’t have to adjust them all day.” We can’t wait until he dials the car in for the Finale at California Speedway.

Thanks to the RobiSpec team for brining home the win. Good luck at Fontana!

Turn In Concepts Wins Redline Time Attack on AST Dampers!

Turn In Concepts, a Subaru shop selling AST shocks, won the Street AWD class this weekend at Redline’s visit to Autobahn Country Club. TiC’s customer car had a blown shock from another shock company and replaced the set with a test set of AST 4100s which were over two years old. Needless to say, the ASTs aren’t coming back off the car after this win! TiC will be competing in several Redline Events this year. We hope to meet up with them at Nashville.

AST’s in action during Camaro Mustang Challenge Race

Test driver, Jeff Wirtz, pulls off another winning weekend at Texas World Speedway in College Station, TX. Here’s some video of the inverted start and Jeff passing the entire field during the 20 minute race. Jeff won the previous race which means the next one has an inverted start where 1st place is last, etc.

Way to go, Jeff!

AST Driver sweeps NASA CMC Event

Posted in AST Suspension, Industry News, Products, Uncategorized, Wins on March 18th, 2009 by admin-ast – Be the first to comment

In his debut event on AST 4100s, Jeff Wirtz of Round Rock, TX pulled off a sweep at the NASA event at Motorsport Ranch.  Jeff was always a top finisher last year, but with ASTs on the car Jeff put multiple seconds on the field in 4 of 4 races.  This included inverted starts where he passed the whole field in the opening laps!  The only car faster than Wirtz’s 3rd Gen Camaro was a fully prepped Mustang AIX classed car (a much faster class).

Camaro Mustang Challenge is a popular class in NASA that is growing especially in the Texas Region.  Wirtz was able to drive a competitor’s car in practice, a car having twin tube shocks.  “I felt bumps on the track with the twin tubes that I didn’t even know were there with the ASTs,” said Wirtz.  AST’s monotube technology can provide forces greater than many lower end shocks without the harshness most drivers experience.

Congrats to Jeff in his first event with the shocks.  Stay tuned for the April event at TWS in College Station!

RRT Suspension wins on AST 4200s

Posted in AST Suspension, Industry News, Products, Wins on February 27th, 2009 by admin-ast – Be the first to comment

RRT Suspension recently made their debut event with their "do it all" BMW E36 running AST 4200s with Vorshlag camber plates. The 325i was built specifically to compete in NASA GTS 2, SCCA ITR, and BMW Club Racing Prepared class. The "do it all" car came out fighting last weekend at VIR. Due to an issue with qualifying run groups, RRT’s Barry Battle was forced to start in the back. Their forum has a video of the 10 lap race where Barry passes the entire field in the first 3 laps and then puts 40 seconds on 2nd place by the checkered flag. The car looks hooked up once he gets through the crowd. We think that must be a combination of driver and suspension since the car has the originally 200k mile motor in it! Great run Barry!

Update on Evo X suspension

Posted in AST Suspension, Products, Tech Articles on December 23rd, 2008 by admin-ast – Be the first to comment
Quick update on the Evo X suspension.  We’re waiting on rear top mounts to test with the rear suspension, but we had enough time on Friday afternoon to get the fronts on.

We installed our new camber plate and AST 4200 double adjustable shocks.  For this first install we used Hyperco 7″, 450 lb, 60mm ID springs.  Not sure where we’ll end up but that’s where we’ll start.  The AST 4200 is an internally adjustable, monotube, nitrogen charged damper designed to meet rule requirements where external reservoirs are not allowed.

The spring perch was moved up to almost seat with the spring platform when installed.  This lowered the car approximately 1″ from stock.  I didn’t want to lower it too much with stock height still in the rear.  We’ll finalize various spring height combinations depending on what dealers and customers ask for.  Yes, we’re aware of driving with such drastically different rates and how that affects handling, ride, etc.  This is just to test fitment, etc.  We’ll put the package together and head out to the track over the holidays if all goes smoothly.
We drove the car over the weekend, granted all the testing was street driving on 5 clicks from full soft rebound, 0 on compression.  We have 12 clicks total rebound and 12 clicks compression.  The car rode extremely well passing the “spouse test” with flying colors.

Here’s where it sits at the moment.  Lowering the front really helps visibility.  The Evo sits up so high, us shorter torso folk can’t see over the huge, flat hood.  :)
